Please Note:- It is anticipated that course participants will attend all eight modules of the course. There is no charge to schools for the sessions but schools will need to cover the absence of assistants.

Please note that the 21/01/09 (ICT day) has been altered to the 22/01/09.


 

Course Aims:

The aim of the course is to help newly appointed teaching assistants develop the skills and understanding necessary to provide effective support in the classroom and to contribute to raising standards.

 

 
Course Details:

Each course uses a variety of techniques, employing a mix of tasks, lecture style and video clips.

Module 1 - Role and Context - 22/10/08 - 1.00pm - 3.30pm (Lindi Holbrook)
This module will explore the various roles undertaken by teaching assistants and will look at job descriptions. It will begin to define the support offered to the school by the TA and the support offered by the school as the TA begins to plan his/her professional development. The idea and details of the National Curriculum will be introduced.

Module 2 - Every Child Matters - 12/11/08 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Ann Willey)
The five outcomes of Every Child Matters are introduced and issues around their impact in school discussed. This module includes a section on Child Protection.

Module 3 - Understanding How Children Learn - 4/12/08 - 1.00pm - 3.30pm (Lindi Holbrook)
An introduction to how children learn which explores learning styles and aspects of learning in a classroom situation.

Module 4 - Promoting Positive Behaviour - 7/1/09 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Ros Herrick)
Sections included in this module include a review of the pre-course task, strategies for promoting positive behaviour and video material to promote discussion around effective practice.

Module 5 - ICT - 22.1.09 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Yvonne Walker)
The module explores the way in which ICT can support teaching and learning and issues around safety and security within ICT.

Module 6 - Inclusion - 4.2.09 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Merilyn Coombes)
Sections in the 'Inclusion' module cover the need for equality and access generally, pupils with Special Educational Needs and those students for whom English is an additional language.

Module 7 - Mathematics - 25.2.09 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Ron Borsberry)
An introduction to supporting mathematics in the classroom.

Module 8 - Literacy - 4.3.09 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Jill Holliday)
An introduction to supporting literacy in the classroom.
