Please Note:- It is anticipated that course participants will attend the generic dates of the course on 23/10/08 and 13/11/08. Applicants can then opt for the relevant subjects. There is no charge to schools for the sessions but schools will need to cover the absence of assistants.




 

Course Aims:

The aim of the course is to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to work effectively alongside teacher colleagues and thus contribute to raising standards in schools.

 

 
Course Details:

Each course uses a variety of techniques, most notably a mix of tasks, lecture style and video clips.

Module 1 - Role and Context - 23/10/08 - 1.00pm - 3.30pm (Lindi Holbrook)
This module will explore the various roles undertaken by teaching assistants and will look at job descriptions. It will begin to define the support offered to the school by the TA and the support offered by the school as the TA begins to plan his/her professional development. The idea and details of the National Curriculum will be introduced.

Module 2 - Every Child Matters - 13/11/08 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Ann Willey)
The five outcomes of Every Child Matters are introduced and issues around their impact in school discussed. This module includes a section on Child Protection.

Module 3 - Promoting Positive Behaviour - 26/11/08 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Amanda Mellows)
Sections included in this module include the importance of school behaviour policies, developing positive relationships and managing difficult situations.

Module 4 - Literacy - 10/12/08 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Nancy Malkin)
The role of the TA in English lessons is introduced and includes the importance and type of support during the teaching of both reading and writing. The module includes an introduction to the Literacy Progress Units.

Module 5 - Mathematics - 22/1/09 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Ron Borsberry)
Contents include 'Key features of maths', the language of mathematics, approaches to calculation and the role of the teaching assistant in structured mathematics lessons.

Module 6 - Inclusion - 11/2/09 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Merilyn Coombes)
Sections in the 'Inclusion' module cover the need for equality and access generally, pupils with Special Educational Needs and those students for whom English is an additional language.

Module 7 - Science - 26/2/09 - 9.00am - 12noon (Magnus Smedley)
The role of the TA in science lessons and ways in which they can help students' understanding is discussed.

Module 8 - ICT - 19/3/09 - 9.00am - 3.30pm (Michelle Kingswood)
An audit of personal strengths and weaknesses supports TA's as they review their own levels of confidence. The module looks at the variety of available ICT tools and the ways in which they can be used to support learning. It raises current issues such as cyberbullying or chat rooms and ways in which students can be encouraged to 'stay safe'.
