There are many courses run at the Education Development Centre about the Internet. See Courses
Basic Internet information
It is often very difficult to find what you want on the Internet. The Lighthouse is here to help you with this. If you are looking for educational web sites then we have already found many of them and you can just follow the links. If, for instance, you want some web sites on Maths Key Stage 2, from The Lighthouse 'Home' page you click on 'Education Web Sites' then click on 'Maths/Numeracy Key Stage 2'. You will now see a list of the sites you are looking for. You can however go to Search The Lighthouse page and type in the search box 'Maths Key Stage 2'. A list of pages from The Lighthouse will appear. Near the top of the list would be the page you wanted. The search box is also available on other pages. Sites that help you find other Internet sites are called Search Engines (click on this link to go to a list of the major search engines). They have a box somewhere on the page. You type in the box what you want to find and click on a 'Search' button. Hopefully you will get what you want. You do have to be very specific. To see a list of the various ways of making an effective search go to Search The Lighthouse page. Search Engines actually only contain a fraction of the number of sites that are on the Internet. The words 'key stage' are not often used on the Internet. Usually ages or the American K-12 are used (K=kindergarten and then year groups). A K-12 site contains material for all key stages. The most successful way to find what you want on the Internet is to go on a site that covers the subject you are looking for and look for a 'Links' page. This will list other sites that deal with the same subject. If you already have the Internet address of a site just type it in the box that says 'Address' (not in a search box). Click on the Return/Enter key on your keyboard. You will go straight there. This is the quickest way to find a site. You can guess an address. For instance, if you type http://www.help.com you will get a site that helps you with the Internet and ICT. Most web sites addresses start with http://www. You do not need to type the http://. There are many endings but the most common are.com (American or International) or .co.uk (UK site). Many web site addresses are very complicated and the only way to find them is via a 'Links' page or a Search Engine.
