This exciting challenge is an annual competition to make model racing cars and is between all secondary schools in the UK. Jaguar and Denford sponsor the competition and the model racing cars were made in schools using Denford CAM Machinery. The pupils started a CAD/CAM engineers club and put in extra hours after school to make their model cars.
The competitors had to Design and Make a model-racing car using the latest proDesktop 3D Modelling software supplied by the Parametric Technology Corporation. The cars were designed and then made with a Computer Aided Micro Router in Hereford School to a very precise design specification. First the cars were designed in 3D on the screen using the software and then the cars were machined out of balsa wood using a special rotating jig that the school designed themselves. They were sprayed and decorated using car paints before the wheels were attached.
The Hereford pupils were invited to take part in a Regional Final in Rotherham and were filmed by Yorkshire TV. It was a really exciting event and there were lots of very fast cars.
It was very impressive; the Hereford School Team entered 3 cars in the race. Before the race the cars were tested in a wind tunnel to see which cars were the most streamlined. During the race C02 canisters powered the cars. The cars have top speeds of 40-50mph. Very fine wires were attached to the cars to stop them flying off the track. Hereford Technology School pupils didnt win the event but they had a really good time and learnt a lot for next time.
Next year theyll
be the best!!
