There seems some confusion as to what is meant by home-school links. We have interpreted this as enabling pupils to access material from both school and home and to improve communication with parents. The Lighthouse for Education provides good educational links to web sites and a growing number of home grown resources for pupils to use wherever they are. The Schoolmaster Community, which we have incorporated into The Lighthouse, provides email, file storage (both personal and shared), calendar (both personal and shared), chat groups, discussion groups, web site creation tools, and shared project tools. Schoolmaster can also provide profanity and virus filtering. The combination of the 2 provide a filter for pupils accessing school material from home. This relates to the document Accessing the Internet - You have a choice (this relates to filtering for school use). Each school has their own domain. Pupils can access material teachers have placed in their shared file storage and also access easily created web pages. Timetables can be placed in shared calendars. Announcements from school and LEA can be placed in the 'front page' areas. These can be timed and only appear in the Schoolmaster account of those it is relevant. Parents can also come in under the scheme and again their schoolmaster accounts can be tailored to their needs. An important point is that no user from one group can chat or join in discussion with another unless the school administrator allows. There are many other facilities in Schoolmaster: A web directory, information for teachers, efriends. They will shortly be incorporating a facility to pair up schools for email communication. We have worked with Schoolmaster for two years now and have been delighted by what they have provided. We have had no technical problems much to our technicians' amazement.
