Digital Video Evening – Grimsby Town Hall December 6 th 2005

After much hard work and deliberation, the first Digital Video Evening was held on Tuesday 6 th December at Grimsby Town Hall.

The evening was a HUGE success, attended by 380 school children, parents, teachers, members of the press and LEA representatives.

The Town Hall Assembly Room
The ICT team had been preparing all day making sure the Town Hall looked fabulous enough to host the event. Nicola Worrell, Sarita Hyldon, Sonia Whitehead and former Primary ICT Consultant Yvonne Walker worked tirelessly in decorating the Assembly Room at Grimsby’s Town Hall. Supporting the team technically in the background was Ian Oldroyd from Promethean who supplied EVERYTHING needed for the presentation to make the evening a success.

As guests started to arrive, so did the Press! Channel 7 were the first in to interview Sarita and Sonia about the purpose of the evening and the importance of developing ICT skills at a young age. During the evening, journalists from the BBC Humberside website (link to article) and the Grimsby Evening Telegraph also attended the event.

Phil Turner delivering the opening speech.

The evening was opened by Phil Turner, Children First Strategic Director. A short speech was delivered highlighting the benefits of being involved in such a project.

It was then time to watch the films. In total, eight films were shown during the evening. They were produced by:

East Ravendale Church of England Primary School "Masks" - The use of masks from differnet periods in time and cultures.
Humberston Church of England Primary School "The Christmas Story" - An animation telling the Christmas Story.
Humberston Cloverfields Primary School
"Wartime News" - A News Broadcast about World War II including an interview with two evacuees.
The Leas Junior School
"Cook’s Corner" - 'Ready - Steady - Cook' with Wartime rations.
Macaulay Junior School
"A Kid’s School Life" - A glimpse of life at Macaulay.
Scartho Junior School
"Sins of Childhood" - An interesting take on the Seven Deadly Sins!
Springfield Primary School
"Health & Hygiene" - A guide outlining how to be healthy and hygiene.
Stanford Junior and Infants
"Various" - A selection of Animations.

The films were received with much laughter and applause. After the films, the audience were treated to biscuits and mince pies during the interval. This was made possible by Mary Berry, Nina Wall and Vanessa Mackie from the School Improvement Team. It was then time to present each school with a statue for all their hard work.

The schools were all congratulated for certain aspects of their work.

East Ravendale Church of England Primary School

Superb, clear, loud presenting
Very informative – everything you will ever need to know about masks! Excellent use of other resources such as the IWB & books.

Humberston Church of England Primary school

Fantastic soundtrack, magnificent singing in the background. Beautiful animations and amazing set design. Extraordinarily creative.

Humberston Cloverfields Primary School

Loved the historical content. Astounding interviewing technique, and again remarkable set design.

The Leas Junior School

Incredible presenting and acting by the chefs. Loved the way they informed us about historical facts using a modern day vehicle like Ready Steady Cook. Very imaginative context.

Macaulay Junior School

Brilliant and innovative use of the software, very brave to film outdoors and get the sound perfect. Splendid use of special effects.

Scartho Junior School

Superb use of software, breath taking soundtrack and use of digital photography – but most of all amazingly humorous!!

Springfield Primary School

Excellent and sensible advice on health and hygiene – a topic that year 6 teachers dread each year. Our healthy schools co-ordinatar, Julie Boxhal, has taken an interest in using this video in other schools. A very informative resource with good use of humour too.

Stanford Junior and Infants School

Fabulous and innovative use of animation. Incredible use of props (teddies and dolls). Amazing sound and brilliant use of the software and cameras themselves.

Two pupils from each school were then presented with an award and a certificate for their hard work, by the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire- Councillor Melanie Dickerson.

Derek Kennard closed the evening by thanking all those who had been involved and Sonia Whitehead was presented with a large bunch of flowers and rapturous round of applause as way of thanks for organising the evening.

Quotes

Phil Turner Children First Strategic Director said: This evening's event demonstrates just how talented and creative the young children of North East Lincolnshire are. When given the tools for the job and the freedom to think for themselves they tackle complex problems and come up with great results.

Derek Kennard Head of Standards said: It was wonderful to see our youngsters very clearly enjoying themselves, and it was terrific to be a part of an event that celebrated their work. I hope that we can develop the project and challenge next year's children to come up with at least as good work as we have seen tonight.
